No Ice

May 16, 2008

So this is something that I didn’t really want to see.

A month-by-month tracking of the Arctic ice from 1977-2007. The white is older ice – five years or more old – and the blues are progressively younger ice, with the shade closest to the ocean being fresh, or one year old, ice. The red dots are tracking buoys, showing how the ice is shifting further and faster as it melts.

There may be no ice for me to see when I get to the island of Svalbard (on the right of the map) next month.
