Eco Hero: Maria Waag

June 5, 2008

This post is part of a series of short introductions to the other young people who’ll be on the Voyage to the Future program with me. The trip to the Arctic is going to be intense, and I’m sure I’ll be video blogging and writing about what the others around me are up to, as well as my own journey.

Maria is one of the Ambassadors for Change from Norway. She is great with young people – she works as a supply teacher at an elementary school where she teaches arts and crafts and is an instructor in gymnastics, so she’ll be well equipped to help mobilise young people in her community to act on Climate Change.

She’ll be working with WWF again later this year, in their Clean Coast program to learn how to clean up the land after major oil spills (the risks of which increase if we allow mass shipping in the Arctic). Elsewhere, she’s volunteered with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and loves dance and drama.

Her interest in the environment goes beyond her activism and involvement – she’s preparing to read Biology at the University of Oslo in October. Her goal is to become a biologist working at an international level to solve environmental problems.

We need more people like Maria!

Here is her blog.
