International Gateway For Gifted Youth

August 6, 2008

On Sunday evening, Emma and I travelled up to our university to speak to the conference for the International Gateway for Gifted Youth. We’d been asked to speak by the Vice-Chancellor, and didn’t know exactly what we should expect.

As soon as the 110 young people aged 11-19 ran/shouted walked into the room, I knew it was going to be good. There is something disarming about teenagers – I just really want to inspire them!

We talked about the Arctic, the UK YCC, the Green Finger – and they LOVED it. I was acutely aware that these were clever youth, so we opened it up as much as possible. The suggestions for ‘what to do’ were never-ending, some of them started sharing their stories and how others could succeed (and bare in mind, this conference had nothing to do with Climate Change!), and there were more questions than we had time for.

The cheer at the end, the hope and the energy which they gave us will keep me inspired for a long time.

This is going to work.

I was there! It was a brilliant atmosphere I’ll admit, your talk really inspired me. Plus that green fingers thing really got going afterwards!
