Newsletter 04.08.08

August 6, 2008

We’ve just sent out our first Newsletter, and I thought it might be good to publish it here as well. If you’d like to be included on the mailing list, let me know!

Dear Friends of the UK Youth Climate Coalition,

We hope the summer is treating you well!

This is the first of a monthly newsletter, to keep our friends from around the world updated on our progress.

It is wonderful to be leading an organisation that gets such a positive reaction when we mention it, and we have been incredibly lucky with the support we are receiving from all sides – so thank you.

This month we’ve made great progress:

  • We’ve been contacting our international friends doing similar work, such as the Indian Youth Climate Network, the Australian Youth Climate Coalition and many more!

  • Meeting/speaking to youth organisations who UK YCC would love to work with such as schools, the UK Youth Parliament, the English Secondary Students Association, UK Climate Change Champions and the National Young Greens.

  • We’ve met with politicians in leading environment positions of all 3 main political parties, including Hilary Benn (Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), Peter Ainsworth (his opposition Shadow Secretary), and Norman Baker (Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Environment Group) to share UK YCC with them.

  • Working the media, in the news and on programmes such as BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour – you can listen to the interview here.

  • And we’ve been going Green Finger crazy (an online viral video tool) and people are taking it up like wildfire! (What would you protect from climate change?)

  • In the process of setting up the necessities, logo, website etc. So watch this space!

  • And we’ve had fun !!!!!! (very important!)

Over the next few months we will continue to build the organisation, step by step, reaching out to the many allies we have and helping to organise the Youth Climate Movement in the UK.

At the moment, we are looking for:

  • Young people (18-30) to become part of the UK YCC Team, let us know if you or others you know are interested!

  • Young people to help out with research. If you’re interested, contact us.
  • Funding (Why is money always an issue?! If you have any advice on this, please let us know!)

Thank you for your continued support, advice, (and late-night Skype conversations),

Casper ter Kuile and Emma Biermann

Co-Directors, UK YCC
