In Order To Be Serious

August 21, 2008

A fantastic op-ed in the Guardian, written at the time of the Kingsnorth Climate Camp.

‘With climate change, in order to be “serious” you need to acknowledge that the end of the world is an interesting detail in the broader pattern of economic “progress”, but never succumb to the incredible naivety of the protesters, who fail to realise that the survival of life on earth is a bourgeois luxury which we can ill afford in these times of economic constraint.’

It reminds me very much of George Marshall‘s point that, although we know climate change is happening, and we know we need to do something, part of us still doesn’t entirely believe it. I’ve just bought his (apparently excellent) book in the hope that I can learn exactly how to convince our inner-skeptic.
