Not Guilty

September 15, 2008

The Kingsnorth Six were found not guilty by a British court this week.

This is a landmark moment in the climate movement, I think. They were charged with causing £30,000 of criminal damage to Kingsnorth smokestack from painting the word ‘Gordon’. Their defense was based on the fact that they were committing one crime to stop another – protecting property around the world from the impacts of man-made climate change.

The people sitting in the jury were just normal citizens – like you and me – and they decided that taking direct action was justified. That’s pretty new.

Various experts from around the world gave evidence in court to support the six on trial, and it paid off. We all know that we need to change how we get our energy, so does the government really still think it’s a good idea to build eight new coal-fired power stations?

The BBC take on the story is here.

This is a little Greenpeace video about the protest.
